San Diego Comic-Con runs July 22-26, 2026, and the exclusive variant cover announcements are already rolling in. Unlike a standard weekly comic, a convention-exclusive variant is typically printed once, in a fixed quantity, and never reprinted. Once the con floor sells out, the only way to get one is the secondary market, often at several times the original price.
That makes this one of the few corners of comic collecting where print run numbers are public and genuinely small. KRS Comics has capped their Absolute Catwoman #1 variant at 800 copies. Their Marvel Swimsuit Special variant with a Black Cat cover is capped even lower, at 750. When a comic is that scarce from day one, how it's handled on the walk back from the booth matters as much as how it's stored afterward.

A comic bought at your local shop usually comes from a case, untouched until it's bagged. A convention exclusive has a rougher trip: picked up at a crowded booth, carried through the show floor in a bag with other purchases, and often stacked flat under other books for hours before it makes it home. Cardstock variant covers in particular are more prone to corner dings and surface scuffing than a standard newsprint-weight cover.
None of that is a problem if you bag, board, and protect the book before it leaves the con, rather than waiting until you're unpacking at home.
The first line of protection for any exclusive is the same as for a regular new comic: a bag and a backer board, applied as soon as possible.
Best protection option: resealable current-age comic bags paired with current-age backer boards keep a freshly bought exclusive flat and sealed against dust and bent corners on the trip home.
For a comic you're planning to keep in top condition long-term, whether that's a low-print KRS variant or a cardstock Titan Comics exclusive, a bag and board alone may not be enough rigidity for a book that's going to be handled, shown off, or shipped.
Best protection option: a rigid current-age comic top loader adds a hard outer layer over the bagged and boarded book, protecting it from bending during transport or storage.
